Defence School Mentor (DSM) program
The importance of the DSM program
Wattle Grove Public School is proud to support Defence families through the dedicated services of our Defence School Mentor (DSM). The DSM plays a vital role in monitoring and addressing the social, emotional, and academic needs of students from Defence backgrounds, ensuring they receive the tailored support necessary to thrive in our school community. By working closely with students who may require additional assistance in the classroom, the DSM helps facilitate a smooth transition and fosters a sense of belonging for children as they settle into life at Wattle Grove Public School.
We understand the unique challenges faced by Defence families and are committed to providing a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment. We look forward to partnering with your family and supporting your child’s educational journey every step of the way.
Meet our DSM - Mrs Tisdell
Working with the children of Defence families is a deeply meaningful part of my role and one that I feel truly honoured to be entrusted with.
As the Defence School Mentor at Wattle Grove Public School, I support the children of Defence families as they navigate the unique challenges associated with Defence life. My role involves facilitating group activities, creative projects, classroom visits, and regular one-on-one check-ins to promote student wellbeing, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
By providing this support, we help students integrate into the school community, build friendships, and develop confidence. Each student’s individual experience is acknowledged, and my role is to assist them in managing transitions and maintaining stability throughout their education.
Ways in which I support your child and family
My key responsibilities include:
- Supporting the transition of Defence families and students into and out of the school during posting (e.g. developing welcoming activities, integration activities to provide support during transition into a new school, absence support activities to provide support during periods of parental absence, and farewell activities to prepare Defence families and students for relocating to a new school).
- Providing Defence students with age-appropriate, social and emotional support that enhances existing school supports.
- Providing Defence families with information about the school environment and available Defence Member and Family Support (DMFS) programs relevant to their child's development.
- Raising awareness and building capacity among school staff to respond to the social and emotional needs of students from Defence families (e.g., sharing information with school staff about the Defence lifestyle, impacts on Defence students, and supports available through the DSMP and DMFS).
- Possessing a strong understanding of the Defence lifestyle and developing strong relationships with Defence students at the school.
